2017-2018 Pre-Season Update
2017-2018 Pre-Season Update
1. Regional Realigment.
The West Virginia Youth Wrestling Association Board of Directors has voted to consolidate regions to a four region system like is used in West Virginia high school wrestling. The Regions adopted do not align with either AAA or AA/A regions; however, they seek to keep a balanced number of youth wrestling teams. 6 wrestlers per region will qualify for the State Championship to build 24 man brackets. Seeding and bracketing will be done on a “pill” system. Stay tuned for details.
The new region map is below.
Contact your Region Chair or Vice Chairman for more details.
WVYWA Regional Tournament Date
The Regional Tournaments will be hosted on the weekend of March 3/4, 2018. Region Chairs will disseminate locations, weigh in times, etc.
WVYWA State Tournament
The 2018 WVYWA State Championship will be held in Beckley, West Virginia the weekend of March 10/11, 2018.
Corey McComas of Competitive Edge has been asked to be Director of Team West Virginia that will attend Virginia Beach in 2018. The 2018 Team WV selection tournament for the Elementary Division will be on Sunday, January 14, 2018 at the Homegrown Elementary Dual State Championship. Each Region is putting together a team for this dual tournament. Other teams are also entering. The wrestler with the best record at this tournament will be asked to wrestle for Team WV at Virginia Beach. Alternates and vacant spots will be selected by Corey McComas based upon historical performance at higher level tournaments with emphasis on head to head matches and places won. Middle School selection is still being determined and will be published when voted on by BOD.
Base Weight/Qualifying Tournament
The WVYWA has elected to modify the base weight rule. No longer does a wrestler have to make a base weight at a qualifying tournament. There is no base weight. The weight class the wrestler wrestles at their Regional Tournament will be their qualifying weight for the WVYWA State Championship. Wrestlers will still be required to wrestle at a least one member tournament each year.
Youth wrestlers must make base weight at Regionals. Youth wrestlers will receive a 1 lb allowance at the WVYWA State Championship in Beckley.
For the middle school division, wrestlers will receive a 2 lb allowance at Regionals and 3 lb at the WVYWA State Championship in Beckley.
